The original X47 pen: 10.5 cm of German mechanics. Available in 9 models and each available as a ballpoint pen or mechanical pencil (0.7 mm or 0.5 mm).
Altogether there are 27 variations.
For our No. 1, this French term takes on a new meaning: Three mechanisms with calibers that can be used with 9 different outer casings.
The concept of No. 1, like our personal organizers, is made to be modular and flexible. The three different mechanisms have the same caliber.
How did it all begin? How does a manufacturer of personal calendars and organizers come across the idea to create his own pens, especially when there are already millions of pens on the market?
The development of the X47 No.1 was a result of pure necessity. At X47, we had a wonderful, practical and high quality personal organizer but we did not have a pen suitable enough to go along with it.
We were looking for a pen that was 10.5 cm long, that felt good in your hand, that was high quality and - in addition to all this - that did not cost more than 50 Euros.
There are an endless number of pens in the world but pens with a length of 10.5 cm are hard to find. Despite our intensive search, we could not find a pen that we were satisfied with.
So we decided to design and create our own pen that would meet all of the X47 requirements: The right size, high quality, excellent price and with an excellent design.
We wanted to produce an outstanding pen; an X47 pen that would be significantly different from other pens.
Fortunately we found the same manufacturer that also makes the mechanics and pens for Faber-Castell and MontBlanc: The Schmidt Technology Company, with their active and competent account manager Frank Schnee.
Here we found good quality mechanics and outstanding quality.
Based on a design from the Chinese designer Chunhui Jiang, we finally developed the No.1 casing.
An outstanding feature of our writing utensil concept lies in the flexibility of its caliber.
You can decide between three calibers, each with perfect turning mechanisms:
All three calibers are the same size and can be inserted in all of our outer casings.
This feature is as far as we know a completely new concept.
Because of this special feature, our pens are organizationally perfect and in addition profit from a fantastic cost-benefit ratio. The flexibility of our pens is not only beneficial to our end customers but also to specialty shops and the manufacturer: Not all (9x3=) 27 product varieties need to be held in stock, but rather only (9+3=) 12 different base product elements. This reduces inventory accounting and at the same time the commitment of capital.
You are probably familiar with this: Suddenly nothing is working anymore. Something is stuck. It is also completely understandable when you think about the fact that the mechanical pencil lead pieces are only 0.5 mm thick.
But what now?
With the No. 1, you can completely disassemble the mechanical pencil pieces. You start by removing the cap, then you can twist out the mechanics and the tip of the pencil, and clean it out - perfect.
When you take apart the pencil, you can also see the beautiful mechanics hidden inside. The shiny surfaces and clean screw thread - everything made of metal!
Good functional design that unfortunately is hidden from view.
Indispensable for every appointment calendar user that prefers to use a mechanical pencil: An eraser. If you remove the pencil's cap, you will see the integrated eraser. When you remove the eraser, you can refill the lead for your pencil.
Our X47 mechanical pencil is made to use standard "D" size lead and also four color lead. You can obtain lead refills at any paper or office store and therefore are not dependent on X47 for re-orders.
It was important for us to create a pen that would be pleasing to the majority of people. As a producer of personal organizers we do not have the market power to convince people to use a specially designed pen.
Therefore, we came to the design table with a classic design in mind, one that would hopefully be pleasing to both men and women. And one that would be comfortable to use for both men and women.
Writing utensils need to sit well in your hand. In this respect, the diameter of the pen plays just as large of a role as the thickness and weight of the pen.
If the pen is too thin, it may look good but after using it for a long time it will become uncomfortable to use or cause you to get a cramp in your hand. If the pen is too thick, you might have a similar problem.
It was a challenge to design the placement and type of midriff for No. 1. It should symmetrically divide the pen while remaining useful as the heart of the pen, behind which the mechanics are hidden. If placed too high, the midriff would make the pen seem too pompous and visually heavy. If made too fine or small, the midriff would make the pen appear low in quality.
In the picture below you can see the importance of getting the right form. It should both look and feel good.
The pen clip should fit with the entire design of the pen and not be too much of an eye-catching accent. The clip supports on both sides of the clip not only improve the stability of the clip but also create a harmony of form and beauty between the clip and the pen's casing.
The Clip is made of a single piece of metal and is screwed, not pressed, onto the upper end of the pen casing with the help of a clip plate.
This was an important detail to us: we wanted to produce pens that could be disassembled and reassembled - a clear characteristic of quality.
How does one best design the tip of a writing utensil? A basic form is easy to find from the wide range of pens on the market. However, what exactly does a tip look like? How does one solve the problem of combining different materials and surfaces? On the one hand, you need certain standards in order to keep costs down, and on the other hand the tip should harmonize well with the surface of the pen casing.
We decided to use different tips for the different styles we offer. In the picture below, you can see an up close detail of our pen tips. They are all chrome in color and for our light-weight, aluminum pen, the pen tip is also aluminum.
For the black casing, we decided to use a slightly different tip casing. You can see that it is one piece, adding to its classic beauty.
Chrome brings a unity of color and material to your day with this pen design.
This classic pen in aluminum brings a cool and modern element to your organization style.
