The X47 Mini Pen
Following the first, original X47 pen we quickly started on the design of our second pen. Our motivation for designing the second pen was similar to that from the first: We could not find a pen that matched perfectly with our expectations.
We needed a pen that would fit perfectly with our mini personal organizer. The pen holder in our X47 Organizer Mini, as with all of our personal organizer models, is horizontally set at the top of the organizer. The length of the pen needed to be 8.5 cm but this was very difficult to find.
At first we looked for a pen that would fit all of our special requirements and expectations. We found one that would work but unfortunately it was not perfect - this was something that we just could not live with.
We were also quite disappointed by the quality of other pens on the market and so we had more than enough reasons to get actively involved in designing just the right mini pen.

The Trick with the Cap
An interesting element of our X47 Mini Pen is that it can be extended to a longer sized pen. If you remove the cap and place it on the end of the pen, the pen will be extended from 8.5 cm to 11.3 cm. A notable difference.
Designing the X47 Mini Pen
In designing the X47 Mini Pen, we created a sample from pieces of other pens and expanded upon that. This made designing the X47 Mini Pen quite easy.
We had to, however, keep the length of the pen at 8.5 cm and make sure the proportions of the three pen elements harmonized well with each other.

Rapid Pen Design
Since we had a basis that we could use for our pen design, it was easy for us to quickly identify the improvements we wanted to make.
Our first step was to create a sample of what we wanted by using pieces of other pens. We shortened the pen cap with a Mini-Flex from Dremel and extended the clip by using two pen clips. We started to feel like we were creating a small version of the Frankenstein monster.
Even the front cover was changed: we took it apart, altered it and glued it back together again. Finally we had a sample of what we wanted; a mini pen that would fit perfectly with our mini organizer.
The Drawing Table
Of course we also made sketches of the pen design that we wanted to have, but we did this only after we had created a sample of what we wanted to have. It was helpful to see and feel the proportions, exactly as we wanted them to be. After that, we could quickly make the design sketches.
